Hanukkah is one of the favorite holidays of Jewish people. The
atmosphere of Hanukkah in Shymkent City was really warm and friendly.
Shymkent Jewish Community Center under the direction of Yelena
Udaltsova visited small towns - Kentau and Lenger to celebrate Hanukkah, light
candles, dance, sing songs and try traditional Hanukkah dishes.
In Shymkent Hanukkah was celebrated on December 15, 2001
About 300 people gathered at the tables. There were a lot of national
dishes: salads, forshmak, fish, dessert and many others. The Holiday started
from candle lightening and reading prayers.
Students of Sunday school participated in holiday concert program;
they prepared quizzes, songs and dances for adults.
Our poets dedicated some poems to Hanukkah.
The Holiday was very successful.
Invitees thanked those people, who organized the Holiday: heads
of Hesed and Jewish Community Center, cooks and volunteers. All the guests were
very happy to be at the Holiday.
