Jewish Community of Petropavlovsk City traditionally celebrated
the holiday in the canteen of school #1.
As always the group of volunteers decorated the hall, placed tables and
laid them. After the chairman of JCC Mark Vitkin celebrated everybody
with the holiday in Russian and Hebrew, the director of Hesed Efraim was
asked to speak. He told about the establishment of the community. Next
year it will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Then Svetlana Makarovskaya
the head of Jewish Community Center read many compliments addressed to
us and told about the history and significance of Rosh-Ha-Shannah.
After the performance of the vocal group "Shalom"
(they sang a few songs including "Bashana-Habaa"), the children
of Sunday school and Youth Club caught the initiative. And there were
more than 50 people! We have not have that big amount of youth on our
holidays before! They sang " Rosh-Ha-Shannah - Happy New Year!"
"Happy New Year!" "Hannah Tova" and many other songs.
The Youth Club performed a sketch about the New Year, which told about
historical roots of this merry holiday.
There were a lot of dances, competitions and quizzes. But
the highlight of the program was the performance of ensemble of violinists
under direction of Yasha Strizhak. The violins and the guitar sounded
very lyrical making a very warm family atmosphere. Everyone knows that
none of modern tape recorders or player can overshadow the voice of real
violin. And it wasn't surprising that many people began to dance forming
the circle of Freilekhs dance!
More than 200 people came to celebrate Rosh-Ha-Shannah in
Petropavlovsk City. None of the holidays has gathered that big amount
of people! Nobody wanted to leave the holiday even elderly people who
usually go home earlier than youth were not in a hurry to go home. People
really appreciated the holiday. The holiday was very successful!
