 The
Community Festival of the Jewish Book was held in Petropavlovsk on August
25. As usual, the day before a group of volunteers together with children
from the Community center decorated the conference hall of the regional
library. Numerous children's drawings, little Israeli flags, posters and
flowers made the cozy hall even nicer. The next day the library doors
opened for the first visitors.
The festival was opened by the head of the Jewish cultural
national center Mark Vitkin. The guests were welcomed to the hall to become
acquainted with an exposition of books and Judaic literature (from stocks
of the regional and Hesed libraries). Then there was a presentation of
the recently published book "Jews of the Northern Kazakhstan",
and the lecture of the Professor of Northern Kazakhstani State University
Valery Lyubushin "Golden Age of the Jewish History - King Solomon's
Ruling."
There can not be an OFEK without humor and satire, the more
as authors of many comic books are Jews. It also refers to 12-volumes
"Anthology of Satire and Humor" recently purchased for the Hesed
library, it contains works of such Jewish authors as Vsevolod Vishnevsky,
Igor Guberman, Viktor Shenderovich, Eugene Schwartz, Yuz Aleshkovsky.
They were not disregarded. The "Jewish Anecdote" staging performed
by the actors of the Dramatic Theatre showed humorous sketches about life
in small towns.
Members of the community tried not to forget about local
poets and writers. It is not the first time that organizers of the Festival
turn to their talented compatriots. This time Galina, the daughter of
a poet Jury Feldman told about her father's life and read his favorite
poems; a member of the Petropavlovsk museum union Irina Matveyeva presented
a report about life and creative activity of a gifted publicist Alexander Shteinberg.
Then the youth club went upon the stage; three tarbuks and the soloist's
amazing voice struck the audience.
The Festival was concluded with a quiz and awards. Everybody
was given a 2002-calendar with the OFEK emblem.
