Thousands
of pages were written about Beilis, a salesman of a brick-yard accused
of a ritual murder of a boy Andrey Uschinsky. Everything seemed to be
clear! However, Almaty journalist Rafael Sokolkovsky managed to find new
information about the trial. Authors of "Satiricon" magazine
headed by Arkadiy Averchenko advocated Beilis.
The
Jewish problems were a popular topic in the pre-revolutionary magazine.
The satirists disclosed the politics of suppression of the Jews, limitations
in social and legal spheres etc.
On the threshold of the trial a special edition of "Satiricon"
was prepared to unmask the lawsuit.
Because
the magazine was very popular, the local authorities forbade the issue,
and the editor was fined. However the articles were already printed, including
Averchenko's witty parody "One More Beilis's Case".
Sokolkovsky shared these and other discoveries with the reader
of the Republican Jewish Library. The meeting was dedicated to the 90s
anniversary of Beilis's acquittal.
