THERE IS NO FUTURE WITHOUT MEMORY

Karaganda 31.05.10

The red granite crossed by barbed wire through the Star of David - mass graves up to the horizon covered with green grass, and an inscription in three languages: Kazakh, Hebrew and Russian "In Memory of Victims of Political Repressions. There is No Future without Memory. Shma Israel", an engraved menorah intertwisted with meridians of the Globe… This stone Stella is dedicated not only to Jews but to everybody who went through the hell of Stalin concentration camps. Grief has neither ethnical origin nor nationality.

On May 31, a meeting in honor of the Memorial Day of the Victims of Political Repressions and an opening ceremony of a monument from Israel took place in the Spasskiy Memorial. The following officials were present at the event: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Mikhail Bocharnikov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Slovakia Dushan Podgorniy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania Emil Rapcha, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany Rainer Shlegeter, Consul and the Head of Administration of the Embassy of Israel Ziv Bilaus, Deputy Akim of Karaganda Oblast Arman Karykbayev, President of Mitsva Association Alexander Baron, Members of the Forum of the People Assembly of Kazakhstan "Memory for the Sake of Future", priests, representatives of the Jewish Community of Kazakhstan, victims of Stalin repressions and their descendants, including Rosa Aitmatova, sister of Writer Chingiz Aitmatov.

Even today nobody can state the exact number of people died in Karlag". After the Israeli Consul’s speech representatives of the Jewish community gathered around the new monument - Rabbi of Astana Yuda Kubalkin recited a memorial prayer.
