The territory of East-Kazakhstani oblast is 2833000 square kilometers.
The population is about 1500000 people.
The town officially started with a Russian fortress founded in 1718. However
some scientists believe that the town is a thousand years older. Before the
fortress was founded, there was a Jungarian town Dorzhinkit with seven palaces
and a Lamaist cloister. Some researchers believe, that "Semey" in
Old Turkic means "religious place".
The town situated at the intersection of strategic railway, motor roads, and
waterways is still an important element of the international trade. Due to its
geographical position it came first among other Kazakhstan towns in the middle
of XIX century. The town has many modern shopping centers and supermarkets,
as well as curiosity shops and traditional bazaars.
A famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky had lived and worked in Semey
for several years. It was there that he made friends with an outstanding Kazakh
scientist Chokan Walihanov. Such prominent figures as Kanysh Satpaev, Sultanmahmud
Toraygyrov, Bibigul Tulegenova, Roza Rymbaeva, Bari Alibasov and others also
lived and worked in Semipalatinsk.
