Overcoming
loneliness is the main purpose of this program. This program is for disabled
people who are not bedridden and can take care of themselves partially. Their
physical abilities are very limited that is why when they stay home alone, they
become nervous, short-tempered, depressed, and their general condition is getting
worse. Day Center does not substitute other programs, it works jointly with
them, and its main purpose is to help people like these to fill up the gap of
relations.
Every day the groups of 10-12 people arrive to the Day Center and
spend there a few hours. This time is dedicated to different classes, discussions
of the problems of relations between individual and society, medical consultations
given by Hesed physicians, and, first of all of course, to socialize and help
each other. Elderly people with joy reveal their hidden talents and it inspires
them to live and socialize.
The participants of the program listen to the following lectures:
"Health of elderly people", Jewish History and Tradition", "Jews
in modern world and Israel", "Jewish music and culture" and many
others. These lectures are read either by outside teachers or the clients (many
of them are highly educated and have a broad outlook). Despite of venerable
age and limited mobility they have precise mind and encyclopedic knowledge.
Thus, Liya Frishman is not only a historian but also a poetess. Very recently
her friends from The Day Center have congratulated her with the edition of her
second book of poems. Professional musicians and musicologists study Hebrew
and Yiddish songs and the chorus sings them with pleasure at Community holidays.
