The administrative center is Petropavlovsk City.
The total area of the North Kazakhstani oblast is 98,3 thousand
square kilometers. The population is 710,7 thousand people, the urban population
is 38 percent. There are 5 cities, 8 urban-type communities in the oblast.
Petropavlovsk was founded in 1752; it became a city in 1807. It
is a railway junction and a port on Ishim River. The population is 203,5 thousand
people (according to the statistics for 1999). There are the following branches
of the industry there: mechanical engineering, metalworking, food industry and
light industry. Also there are some institutes of higher education, the theatre
and museum of regional in Petropavlovsk.
Jewish people live all over the territory of the oblast.
Since 1999 American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC,
"Joint") cooperates with Ust-Kamonogorsk
Jewish national organizations. Welfare Center "Hesed" sponsored by
"Joint" started working here in 2000.
