THERE IS NO FUTURE WITHOUT TEACHERS

  On 18 May 2001 in Almaty there was a memorial meeting dedicated to Iosif Benediktovich Kogan the outstanding musician, Honored Artist of Kazakhstan, and professor of the conservatory.
  This evening took place due to the efforts of "Mitsva" Association, Jewish Community and Almaty State Conservatory. Yelena Shalkova-Kogan daughter of Iosif Kogan and talented pianist did everything in her power to help organizing the evening. Boris Solomonovich Abramovich Honored Cultural Worker and Veteran of the World War II and the old friend of the Kogans also was one of the organizers of it.
  Teachers and students of the Conservatory and Music school named after Akhmet Zhubanov, clients of Hesed Polina and many other people gathered in a cozy hall to honor the memory of Iosif Kogan. Marin Stenesku the Ambassador of Romania and his spouse Georgette Stenesku were among the guests.
  Alexander Baron the president of "Mitsva" Association started the evening, he emphasized that nobody has the future without good teachers. "Iosif Kogan was a real teacher who made his contribution into prosperity of the Republic of Kazakhstan" - he said.
  Friends and colleagues shared their memories about Kogan and the sounds of his violin had been heard all the evening. Everybody had a chance to listen recorded voice of Iosif Kogan and his musical composition "Caprice" performed by the author.
  Yan Fudiman, professor of Conservatory told about unusual life of Iosif Kogan. Iosif Kogan was born in 1920; his father was a musician and knew Jewish Folk music very well. He handed out his love to music and his talent to his children. Iosif Kogan was an outstanding violinist and his children Semyon and Eve became pianists. In 1939 Iosif Kogan graduated from Kishinyov Conservatory; and when a part of Romania was given to the Soviet Union he started touring throughout the country with concerts. In 1942 Iosif Kogan moved to Almaty (he did not join the army because of poor eyesight). Here, in Almaty he spent the rest of his life, here he became a famous violinist and composer. Then he studied in Almaty Conservatory, after that he gave concerts all over Kazakhstan, Russia and other republics. He was also a good teacher and a public worker.
  Professor Kozhamkulova, Klushkin, the National artist of Kazakhstan, professor Uzbekov, Mrs. Senchenko who worked as an accompanist of Kogan's class at the Conservatory for 12 years, Mr.Abramovich, professor Baspayev, composer Amanzholov they all shared their memories about Iosif Kogan. Kogan played his last concert for the violin with orchestra, which was composed by the young composer Amanzholov.
All speakers talked about the eminent talent of Kogan, about his knowledge of Kazakh National music, about his support of the beginners and his intuition in choosing the best ones.
  His musician repertoire was very big; it included composition of many Russian and Western composers. He had a phenomenal memory and his technique was masterly. Iosif Kogan knew Jewish music and tradition very well.
  In addition to the conservatory Iosif Kogan taught in school named after Akhmet Zhubanov, where he established an ensemble of violinists. He was the director of the National University of Culture. He was a brilliant person and a teacher.
  Nobody could stay indifferent to the compositions, performed at the memorial meeting.
  Chamber orchestra "Ad Libitum" under the direction of Murzagaliyev played music; Kogan's student Viktor Bardashov performed violin solo at the evening. The violins of the ensemble of the music school named after Zhubanov sounded clearly and touchfully; professor Kozhamkulova's student Aidarkulova performed Kenes-kyui arranged by Iosif Kogan. Yegmetov the student of professor Fudiman and Yelena Kogan performed the rhapsody by Veprik for the viola and piano. The quartette of the State Symphonic Orchestra played the adagio by Beethoven.
  The final item of the program was "Aria" by Bach performed by the ensemble of violoncellos under the direction of professor Baspayev. Yelena Kogan played the piano part.
  The evening passed very quickly but before it finished all people tried to come to the armchair where Valeriya Kogan, the widow of Iosif Kogan was sitting to wish her health and happiness for her children. And the name of the big musician and a nice man Iosif Kogan will be remembered forever.
