On 25 May 2001 there was a presentation of the novel "Roses
and Chrysanthemums" by Svetlana Shenrunn in the Literature Club of
Hesed Polina. The novel was edited by Moscow publishing house "Text".
Its series "Open book" is like an open window to the world of
prose of the new century providing meeting of Russian speaking writers
and readers living in different countries.
Svetlana Shenbrunn lives in Israel, and her prose is published
in some magazines; she also does some translation from Hebrew.
She was born in Moscow, studied in course for scriptwriters
and worked in television.
Her novel "Roses and Chrysanthemums" is a story of conjunct
lives of people of different ages and different eyes. They all live in
writer's house. The scene of the novel is a communal flat where even a
neighbor could be an informer. The novel is written about the period of
the last years of the World War II and the post-war period. The narration
is in the name of a young girl. It is a sincere and reliable story about
that period of time. It is clear what "bunch of flowers" people
of 60ies came from. They defend their souls - opening rosebuds with
thorns - riots and daring.
They say, it is impossible to keep roses and chrysanthemums
in one bunch of flowers because rose will fade. But it so if you cut them.
Life is magnanimous. Roses could never know they are roses without chrysanthemums…
The presentation was prepared and performed a journalist Alla
Gelfand. It was a really interesting discussion, and our readers Bella
Kvitko, Irena Krichevskaya etc participated in it.
