PRESENTATION OF "MOTHERLAND" MAGAZINE

The "Motherland" magazine  On November 6 habitues of Hesed "Polina" library literature club were introduced to the "Motherland" magazine. Why did this magazine attract attention of the organizers? The answer is very simple - besides its literary values, the magazine won the affection of Kazakhstani Jews by an issue totally devoted to "Jews in Russia". The success of that number in our community can also be explained by the coming First International Conference "Jews in Kazakhstan: History, Religion, Culture".

In the magazine you can find many interesting materials: interviews with famous people; articles on the history of Jews in Russia, religion, philology; biographies of famous Jews living in Russia. Of course, the presenter Lubov Koretskaya had no time to cover all the topics. But the articles she read captivated the guests. Among them were the appeal of Vladimir Zorin, a minister of Russian Federation, interview with Rabbi Adin Schteinsald, and also the opinion on the "Jewish question" given by the gentiles Vladimir Mishukevich and Sergey Kara-Murza.

The researches on the interaction between languages also were very interesting. For example, Vladimir Gorenshtein's article "Names" explained the etymology of the word "Jews", and Lidiya Granovskaya's research "Hipesh and Osannah" was devoted to the words borrowed from Hebrew into Russian.

There also were many items about different periods of life of Jews in Russia, starting with ancient times and to our time. Among them were "Jewish Gates" article about Jews of Old Russia, "How Chaim Was Enlisted" article about tsars' politics, and "Matzoh Under a Cloud" about the opinion of communist party on the "Jewish question", as well as materials about the period of massacres, exiles, oppression of religion, and Holocaust.

This magazine will be interesting for every Jew. You can read it in the reading room of the Jewish republican library or try to find it in libraries of your own cities.
