Almaty is the administrative center, South capital
of Kazakhstan.
The territory of Almatinskaya oblast is about 220
thousand square kilometers. The population is more than 280 thousand people.
The following branches of industry are developed in the oblast: machinery,
food, light and building materials. There is Kapchagay electrical power plant
on Ily River and Kapchagay artificial reservoir there.
Navigation is on the lake Balkhash and Ily River. There is agriculture, people
grow whit, barley, corn, rice, sugar beet and tobacco.
Also fruit and wine growing are developed there. In Issyk City there is a winery,
its production is recognized all over the world. Animal breeding: sheep, cattle
and poultry.
In the mountains, near Almaty there are resorts and tourists centers. On the
territory of Charyn Canyon there is relic ash-tree grove. And it is possible
to go sport fishing on Balkhash Lake.
The population of Almaty is more than one million people. 3 thousand Jews are
in Jewish Community.
Since 1992 American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC,
"Joint") cooperates with Almaty
Jewish national organizations. First Kazakhstani Welfare Center "Hesed"
sponsored by "Joint" started working here in 1996.
