 By
invitation of JDC and "Mitsva" Association, Michael Beizer has
visited Almaty. A scientist, historian, and literary man, the author of
a famous book "Jews in St-Petersburg" became an
honorary guest of OFEK 2003. On the first day of his visit, Michael Beizer
visited the Almaty Jewish cemetery to pay homage to rabbi Levi Yitzhak's
memory.
"Life of Jews in Kazakhstan is still a blank spot",
our guest said. "That is why it was interesting for me, as for a
historian, to visit this country, meet the community, and learn the facts
at first hands. In my turn, I wish to share my knowledge, thoughts, and
to tell about my books".
Presentation of his book "FSU Synagogues in the Past
and Present" has been the first event in OFEK 2003. Not only community
members, but also representatives of city and republican libraries and
teachers came to the meeting.
 Two
hours were not enough to ask all the questions. The author considered
every remark and comment.
In spite of his busy schedule, Michael Beizer found time to
meet representatives of the "Rimon" JCC historical club. They
had a professional conversation. Club members told him about their research
and scientific conferences, and the series "From the History of Jews
in Kazakhstan". Michael Beizer highly appreciated their work.
In the remaining three days of his visit, Michael Beizer is
going to hold several library literature clubs and participate in OFEK
activities. Today his lecture "Famous Jews" is going to take
place in the Hesed "Polina". We are looking forward to it.
