OFEK 2003

In the framework of OFEK an exhibition of Abraham Cherkassky's pictures opened in Almaty. Abraham Cherkassky was the founder of the arts school in Kazakhstan in the middle XX century. The exposition prepared on the initiative of the Republican Jewish Library is going to be demonstrated in the central state arts museum for three weeks.

A memorial meeting dedicated to Cherkassky's life and works was conducted by the editor of "Davar" newspaper Ludmila Varshavskaya. The artist's students were honorary guests of the meeting.

"In spite of hard war years, that time was full of kindness and mutual understanding between our teacher and us", one of his former students said. "Going to exhibitions together, talking in the studio, learning from him - all that played the crucial role in my self-identification. It was then that I found out that landscape was my basic genre."

One of the artist's former students - Lidiya Hlopova is a famous Kazakhstani arts woman and Cherkassky's best biographer. Her story about Abraham's youth helped the audience to get the complete idea of the man whose pictures fascinate Kazakh people. It proved that his parents did not believe in their son's talent and insisted on his dropping drawing. It was Shalom-Aleihem who earnestly asked Abraham's father not to hinder the boy. Abraham Cherkassky's pictures are exhibited in Danish and Dutch museums as well as in the best FSU art galleries.

Though the opening took place on a workday, over 150 people gathered in the museum. They were Almaty community members, Cherkassky's admirers, and beginning artists. Thanks to OFEK the young painters saw the author's works in original. Maybe his talent will inspire them for future creation.
