It
is hard to believe that somewhere in Ust-Kamenogorsk there lived a man whose
name is famous all over the world, while in his motherland there are only few
specialists familiar with it.
An outstanding scientist of the twentieth century, Div Varshavsky
was one of those who created and applied energy government standard that was
used in the USSR and is still used in the FSU.
May the story of the worthy man be remembered in Kazakhstani Jewish
community:
"I was born in Ukraine. In 1941 my mother got to Leninogorsk.
Having graduated from school, I went to Leningrad to enter a university. And
it happened so that my papers were accepted only two days before the end of
entrance examinations. So I had to pass all 11 exams in 48 hours! I simply took
a card, answered, and ran to another teacher.
After that I worked in Moscow and was appointed to Ust-Kamenogorsk
factory. Then I upheld a thesis in the Academy of Science of Kazakhstan. I simply
couldn't part with this land!"
Today, besides for science, I'm interested in Jewish history.
For example, it proved that one of the first decrees of the Soviet government
was "shooting for anti-Semitism". Such information was concealed for
a long time, but now many new things are discovered.
I remember that my mother knew Hebrew, but she was a communist and
didn't observe the Tradition. But my grandfather was a religious man and he
didn't hide it. In spite of religious persecutions he wore a talit, prayed,
and kept all rituals. And I'm also gradually coming back to the source."
He will always be 75. Div Varshavsky's motto "Work is my life"
has never been just fine words. His ideas, works, initiatives, and experience
will support more than one generation.
