On
February 9 "Rimon" JCC of Almaty city organized a meeting with Dmitry
Shchiglik, one of the authors of "Way to Zion" book, active member
of Zionistic American Organization (ZAO), delegate of the First World Congress
of Russian-language Jewry. He is an author of several articles
about problems of Zionism and modern Jewry. First he told the guests about the
idea of "Way to Zion" book. The audience was really interested in
life of the Jewry and modern Israel, and received clear and exhaustive responses
to their questions.
Cosy hall of "Rimon" JCC could seat only fifty members,
among them were members of "Ruth" women's club, "Shalom"
family club, and the staff of Hesed 'Polina" and "Rimon" JCC.
Members of Kazakhstani Jewish community became interested in "Way
to Zion" book long before the author's visit, and thanks to his present
the books were distributed throughout the branches of Republican Jewish Library.
According to the responses of those who have already read the book, it was "a
significant work that helped us to understand the essence of Zionism anew".
A few words about the book. Contents of most works on Judaism roughly fall into
several subjects: Jewish history, Jewish religion, anti-Semitism,
history of Zionism, and the land of Israel. "Way to Zion" is a unique
example of all the subjects united and interconnected in one book.
"Way to Zion" is written in a bright, spirited, and convincing
way. The authors did not avoid vexed questions. For example - Who are the
Jews? This question has always been topical, and many chapters are devoted to
it, but most likely it is hard to find a definition of Jewish self-identification
than that on the page 133: "… individual feeling of one's personal
belonging to, indissoluble connection with the Jewish people, its history, and
fate".
Those who have such feeling will surely be grateful to D.Shchiglik
and D.Golubev for their work worth wide distribution.
We look forward to reading our friend's new book, which he mentioned
during the meeting.
Community center library was presented the author's books with his
autograph.
