| On
May 1 the Karaganda Regional Department of Culture presented a celebration
of the Day of Kazakhstani Nations' Accord. All national and cultural centers
were invited to take part, and "Shemesh" JCC prepared its own
program.
The
holiday began with a festive parade. Columns of marchers dressed in folk
costumes went along central streets with the slogan "Peace, Unity,
Kazakhstan" written in their native tongues. Regional officials,
honored guests, and directors of national and cultural centers congratulated
the citizens.
JCC's youth club "Shatil" performed traditional
Sukkot ceremonies. There was a real Sukka on the stage. The youth presented
a sketch on the subject of Arbaha Minim, performed a Jewish dance, and
sang a Jewish song. In conclusion they treated guests with dates.
The
second part of the program was given to solo performances. Jewish culture
was represented by Stella Suhorukova, a singer from the JCC children's
center "Perurim". The audience greeted her with loud cheers.
The celebration
concluded with a beauty competition. Each Diaspora was represented by a girl in
a folk costume. The participants told about themselves in three languages -
Russian, Kazakh, and their native tongue. They sang songs, danced, and described
their costumes. The girl from the Jewish Diaspora was Alena Hasanova, a member
of "Shatil" youth club.
At the end everybody was given small gifts.
