for Asian countries and Caucasus Stanley Abramovitch (JDC) and the President
of "Mitsva" Association Alexandr Baron have visited Hesed "Miriam"
in Karaganda. During the meeting with the staff they listened to reports
of Hesed program coordinators. Stanley Abramovitch and Alexandr Baron
paid special interest to the cultural programs in "Shemesh"
JCC. Soon the JCC activities will be demonstrated in Almaty and Astana
communities in the framework of OFEK. Stanley Abramovitch attached mezuzahs
to jambs of Hesed "Miriam" two new offices.
 The
guests were taken on tour to "Dolinka" village - the former
center of Karaganda labor camp. They visited the cemetery, museum, and
library with an exposition of literary, historical, and fiction works
dedicated to repressions and the labor camp. Old-timers shared their impressions
about the hard times. Stanley Abramovitch and Alexandr Baron thanked the
hosts for the interesting excursion.
Upon their return to Karaganda the guests met with the Hesed
"Miriam" Public Council. They discussed topical issues of Jewish
cultural development and welfare activities in the Karaganda region. The
Chairman of the Council Iosif Breido presented Stanley Abramovitch with
a collection of his poems.
