 Karaganda
branch of the Republican Jewish Library began working in September 2000. Today
it has about 820 books, 90% of them were written by the Jewish authors and 10%
are about the Jewry. Besides, there are records, audio- and videotapes.
The library has 230 readers, and it is not the end!
The library works everyday. Library literature club and musical
club organize regular meetings. The clients of Hesed "Miriam" and
JCC eagerly visit lectures and discussions dedicated to famous Jewish artists,
cultural workers, statesmen, and scientists. Such meetings are always crowded
and merry. The library becomes a source of inspiration and the center of cultural
life for Karaganda Jews.
Not long ago the library became mobile - it travels to neighboring
towns of Saran and Temirtau. Last year it successfully organized the Community
Festival of the Jewish Book OFEK and is already getting prepared to the new
festival.
The library is growing. Its activities are gradually atomized; electronic
catalogue is being created. At the same time the librarians are creating subject
card index and library archive. The library works in cooperation with clubs,
programs, directors of Karaganda Hesed and JCC. It keeps in touch with other
libraries of the town.
