On
the initiative of the Hesed "Polina" free-will assistants Volunteers
service has started a new program "Mevaker Helim" ("Visiting
ill people"). Jewish wise men were sure that attention and care could breathe
new life into ill people. Communities often created special groups to visit
patients.
Following our ancestors' precepts, "Mevaker Helim" does
not care after people's bodies, but helps them to socialize, to be well informed
about Hesed and JCC news, and also to learn more about the history and culture
of their own people.
"Mevaker
Helim" volunteers bring back the Tradition to community members. They tell
the clients about TaNaH, Yiddishkait, Jewish calendar and many other things.
When preparing to each visit the volunteers learn more themselves.
They say that the good they make returns to them. The clients inspire them to
search for something new, something they do not know yet.
"Mevaker
Helim" volunteers are not young people. The youngest is 63 years old. And
when ill clients (unfortunately, most of them are elderly) see enthusiastic
people of their age, they feel a burst of energy and begin to believe in the
wish "live till 120".
If you have time and desire to help people in need, "Mevaker
Helim" will be glad to meet you! "Mevaker Helim" is already with
you!
