Romain Gary was born in Russia. His real name was Romain Kacev.
When the boy was three years old his mother emigrated together with her
son. The history of their family relations is described in the book "Promise
at Dawn".
"My son is going to be a French delegate, awarded
with an order of the Legion of Honour, great drama actor, Ibsen, Gabrielle
D'Annun-zio. He is going to dress in London style!"
The son fulfilled his mother's ambitious dreams.
In 1956 Romain Gary received Goncourt award for his book "The
Roots of Heaven".
"My self is not enough for me. When I stay along for
too long I feel cramped, my self strangles me…"
Emile Agar (Romain Gary's pen-name) appeared in the world
literature in 1974. Agar's second novel "The Life Before Us"
written on behalf of an Arabic boy Momo followed the tradition of Victor
Hugo's "Les Miserables" and received Goncourt award.
