THE FESTIVAL HAS GROWN OLDER

Community Festival of the Jewish Book has finished in the Southern Kazakhstan. No doubt it has grown older for the several years and became more professional. Its organizers did their best to cover all the community members. Thus, on the first day of the festival Poetical Evening was presented in Shymkent. Not only acknowledged poets, but also young talents took part in it.

"Brain-ring" intellectual game aroused unexpected interest. The youth team played against the audience which asked rather difficult questions about Jewish history, religion, politics, literature, and art. In spite of the tricky questions, the team won 8 rounds of 12.

The second day of the festival was devoted to children. They were invited to the program "Boys and Girls Visit the Jewish Book" which gave them the most interesting impressions. There were books and children's articles exhibition, dancing and singing, various competitions with awards and presents. The program finished with watching cartoons.

The next morning the festival set off. It planned to visit the town of Arys and present a lecture "Seven Keys to Judaism". Representatives of Shymkent also told about the Jewish writer Amos Oz and his popular novel "My Michael".

After OFEK returned to Shymkent, a lecture about Jewish themes in cinema was presented. Then the guests were shown Roman Polansky's film "Pianist".

On its fifth day OFEK was also on the way. It visited the town of Kentau to present an exhibition of books by a Kentau poet Nikolay Kuznetsov.

One of the festival days was given to a scientific conference "By Paths of History and Tradition". It was continued by a book exhibition and a lecture "Hebrew - the Revived Language". The meeting was finished by a video lecture made by Almaty "Rimon" JCC.

On its last day OFEK traveled again. It visited Kzyl-Orda and presented new Jewish books.

The festival left many impressions. Everybody felt that its program became more interesting and informative.
