Naum
Shafer's CD "The Light of Hope" was presented in Pavlodar on June
23. The honour to hear the music first fell on the clients and staff of Hesed
"Rachel". The community estimated it at its true worth, because "The
Light of Hope" is a mini-anthology of Jewish songs of the
XIX - XX centuries - 150 years of Jewish history in music.
The
idea to create this CD came to Naum Shafer after visiting Israel. According
to his own words, he took a risk of recording famous Jewish songs in Russian.
It was necessary, because most of the Jewish youth in Kazakhstan know neither
Hebrew nor Yiddish, and hence can not understand and evaluate the Jewish musical
culture in full measure.
Naum Shafer compiled the music himself. 12 of 25 songs were recorded
from his memory. The songs are listed chronologically, from XIX century compositions
to modern songs. There are also 5 songs of Isaac Dunaevskiy - Naum
Shafer is a leading researcher of his creative activity.
Many songs on the CD have their own story. For example, "Spring
Sun" was restored due to an old school copybook, in which the author had
written the words of a simple children's song that he had studied at the Jewish
school.
There are also several popular modern Jewish songs. Some of them
make the tears turn on, others remind of something happy and funny. "The
Light of Hope" is a great gift for the Jewish community of Pavlodar and
the whole Kazakhstan. Mazal tov!
