We
continue our story about the famous Jews born in November. Today the Library
Literature club members have been told about a Russian orientalist, researcher
in the field of the Jewish history and literature Abraham Garkavi.
Born to the family of a rabbi, Abraham received complete religious
education. In 1863 he entered the Oriental department of Saint-Petersburg
university.
The Jewish student's brilliant abilities and skills drew attention
of the university professors. In 1868 he received Master's degree.
It happened so that for all his life Garkavi was the main
researcher of the Emperor's Public Library which included a great number
of ancient manuscripts in Hebrew and other languages.
The results of his numerous researches were published in various
editions.
Abraham Garkavi's academic knowledge and accomplishments brought
him fame. He was a member of Russian and foreign scientific societies.
He died on March 15, 1919 in Petrograd and was buried in the
Jewish cemetery near the synagogue.
