THE HISTORY OF JEWS IN KAZAKHSTAN AS AN EXAMPLE OF TOLERANCE BETWEEN KAZAKHSTANI NATIONS

Presentation of senior schoolchildren's researches was held in Almaty secondary school # 147. Participants of ethno-cultural section Mikhail Pisarenko and Elvira Sabitova (secondary school # 4, 10th form) presented a research on the topic "The History of Jews in Kazakhstan as an Example of Tolerance between Kazakhstani Nations".

The children were inspired with their history teacher's story about the WWII catastrophe, after he visited the seminar "Tolerance  - the Lessons of Holocaust" in February 2003. The seminar was arranged by "Mitsva" Association and Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. Mikhail and Elvira said that they never knew before about Kazakhstan's significant contribution to interethnic and interreligious tolerance.

"It's hard to say and harder to imagine that in several years Nazis killed every two Jews out of three!" the project authors explained. "That is why with an example of the long stable life of the Jewish community in Kazakhstan we tried to explain everybody the need of neighborly relations between our country's nations and in the whole world."

The researchers' scientific advisor was "Mitsva" Association children and youth programs' coordinator Larissa Poltavksaya. Being a history teacher, she not only gave advices, but also helped the teenagers to feel the spirit of that time and to understand the peculiarities of Jewish cultural, religious, and everyday life.

Thanks to the "Mitsva" Association support the young researchers received access to the State Archive, President's Archive and "Mitsva" Association historical club's materials. Mikhail Pisarenko and Elvira Sabitova got the 3rd prize. Our congratulations!
