HISTORY OF JEWISH NAMES

Pavlodar 13.01.05

A lecture "Jewish names" was held in Pavlodar community center in the framework of a line of lectures "Jewish history and Tradition". Meeting participants told about how the Jewish name appeared and about the fact that in different times Jews used both traditional names and names borrowed from the neighboring nations.

"Since the middle of 18th century Jews felt a sharp necessity of gaining family names", told Oleg Bikovskiy, a conductor of the meeting. "Families were derived from names (Yakobson, Abramovitch), names of places (Berliner, Berditchevskiy), professions (Druker) or nicknames (Gross, Shapiro). And since January 1, 1939, Jews of Germany were given additional names: Israel-for men, Sarah-for women".

According the materials of that lecture, in the last ten years has significantly strengthened the tendency towards keeping the traditional family names, as a recognition of pride for one's origin. Meeting participants payed a great interest to everything they heard and looked at the Jewish history from a new side.
