HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

Every year Jews all over the world commemorate Holocaust on Yom Ha-Shoah. "Shoah" is translated from Hebrew as "disaster" and "devastation", and "Holocaust" in Greek means "burnt offering".

On April 18 Ust-Kamenogorsk Jewish community gathered for Holocaust Remembrance Day. The number 6000000 was written in black letters on the wall and paled with barbwire. All of the participants were dressed in black with the only bright spot - a yellow six-point star.

The Hesed "Faina" youth also took part in the meeting - they told about Holocaust, Warsaw Ghetto, and righteous gentiles. After that everybody said all together "We are lighting this candle in memory of…", and every time men were invited to light up the candles.

Representatives of Ukrainian and Byelorussian cultural centers who also visited the meeting shared their childhood recollections about the horrors of Holocaust. After that the audience watched an extract from "Shindler's List" movie.

The same as in Israel, an exhibition "Keep Memory Alive" was presented in the Hesed "Faina" on Monday, April 19.
