 The Republican Jewish Library has many pleasant surprises in store for its members. The last week it presented "Jewish Borough Recalls" movie shot by BBC in 2003.
The movie brings back the memories to the elders of Almaty Jewish community who lived in the same boroughs in Ukraine, Belorussia or Poland. The young audience has an opportunity to look into the history of their people and realize that we owe our present-day life both to small Jewish towns and well-developed Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.
The movie reveals the role of the Tradition in a Jew's regular life; it presents the peculiarities of national cuisine and clothing in the borough; it shows people's respect for studies and the inherent sense of humor which they handed down from generation to generation.
The recalls took about an hour. Then the audience shared their impressions and memories. The elders told about their life in such kind of boroughs, where schooling was in Yiddish, and Sabbath candles were lit up every Friday.
The meeting was prepared and held by Evgeniya Karyakina, the head of the Republican Jewish Library.
