Almaty 21.03.2005
Onló several months ago mainly elderly people helped Jewish Republican library in Almaty. But today young people come there more and more often. Most of them are students. Middle-aged people are also among them. There are just several names of young volunteers, helping elderly generation: Kirill Devy, Anna Paramonova, Svetlana Golovina, Liliya Bikova. Though we may not call them new comers - some of them has already several years participated in community work.
Volunteers arrange books in accordance with sections, search literature for visitors, they are always ready to give an advice on new and interesting books appeared in the library. But the main thing is that volunteers prepare discussions, literary halls, presentations of new books, overviews of periodicals.
"We want to encourage our volunteers with something, - a head of the library Evgeniya Karyakina says, - so, library gives exactly them the right of being the first to read new books, invites them for plays and holidays, held by the community.
Not at once people become volunteers; it's something like the call of a soul to be more often in the atmosphere of calmness and wisdom, by helping community. After probation, we solemnly accept a new volunteer into our family."
Today Jewish Republican library counts more than 7000 book names and a great number of periodicals. About 30 people come there every day. Taking into consideration such big circulation, it would be very hard for the workers without volunteer helpers. Each of 15 library volunteers comes here once or twice a week. Workers are proud for these people, disinterestingly ready to give their time and energy to the community.
We are glad that community is supported not only by experienced people with turned white hair, but by youth as well. Youth, that understands the importance of rendering help others.
