NEW PRESIDENT

The results of the second round of voting on elections of the president of Israel became known. As expected, Shimon Peres took this post, having received thus 86 votes. As other applicants have removed the nominees, the deputies should give back the vote for or against of Peres. In total in this round participated 109 parliamentarians, against voted only 23.   3 applicants - Shimon Peres (party "Kadima"), Kolet Avital ("Avoda") and Rubi Rivlin ("Likud") participated in the first round. For Peres 58 votes, for Avital - 21, for Rivlin - 37 were sent. Three deputies have lowered in a selective urn the empty forms, one bulletin was not included. Shortly after the results became known, Avital and Rivlin have removed the nominees and called the supporters to give their votes for Peres.

  According to the law, 84-year's Peres can execute duties of the president within 7 years. His predecessors on this post were Chaim Weissman, Itzhac Ben-Tsvi, Zalman Shazar, Ephraim Katzir, Itzhac Navon, Chaim Gertzog, Ezer Weitsman and Moshe Katsav.
