The opening of the Exhibition in memory of Nuhim Shilman took place at the exhibition hall of Hesed "Polina". The event was attended by his friends from the photography clubs and other followers of his works.
The members of the photography club "Medeo" warmly remembered Nuhim Shilman.
"This man was born under a lucky star," said the manager of the club Valery Korenchuk. "He was a soldier when the World War II began. On 7 November, 1941 he marched at the Red Square with thousands of his peers and ended up right in the middle of the battle for Moscow. He was extremely lucky - he survived the war. He marched at the Red Square once more during the famous Parade of Victory."
Shilman was born on 5 December, 1922. He began his medical career by attending the Military medical courses. After the war he graduated from the Leningrad Military Medicine Academy, and then worked in the Baltic, Bashkiria and Siberia. In the late 1960’s he arrived to Alma-Ata and managed the Medical Services at the Middle Asian Military Region.
In 1974 Nuhim Shilman retired from military after reaching the rank of Leutenant-Colonel. Following his retirement, he taught sanitary and hygiene in a food technology college for 22 years. He then departed with is family to the USA.
Shilman became the member of the club "Medeo" in 1968. During his free time he was dedicated to photography and cinematography. He took part in many club, USSR and national competitions, and his works were displayed at international exhibitions. He always kept in touch with "Medeo" club and often called from the far Rochester.
Nuhim Shilman died on 31 January, 2008.
His works have a distinctive style, but each photograph captures a particular mood. Some make a viewer sad, others depict humorous situations. The exhibition of his works contains photographs of faces that touched the author’s soul, countryside, and even the portrait of the Master himself taken by one of his colleagues.
The exhibition will be open until the end of May, 2008.
