Exhibition "On roads of Ancient East" of the Jewish artist, photographer and engraver Ephraim Moses Lilien was held in Hesed.
Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874 - 1925, Badenveiler, Germany), Jewish graphic artist. He is the son of the woodcarver. He got traditional Jewish upbringing; since childhood he showed aptitude for art. He studied at School of fine arts in Krakow (and left it because of absence of funds). In 1895 he entered in the Munich academy of applied arts. He earned his living by figures for different magazines, including for "Ugent" (since 1896), propagandizing German variant style modern, master of which Lilien became soon.
In 1898 Lilien moved to Berlin and first of the artists-Jews jointed to Zionist movement. He participated in establish (1902) Berlin publishing houses "Udisher farlag", he was illustrator, editor, manager of enterprise, agent on advertising. His art photo of Theodor Gertzel on the bridge through Rhine and design of "Golden book" of the Jewish national fund (1901) became very popular.
In creativity of Lilien dominated Jewish (in particular bible) theme: illustrations to bible ballads of the German poet B.F. fon Munchausen’s "Uda" (1900), to poem of M. Rosenfeld (1902), to Song of Songs (1905) and other works of literature.
Numerous landscape and household sketches made by Lilien in Israel, Beirut, Damascus, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland is the basis of series and separate sheets etchings (mainly on the Jewish themes), above which since 1908 he worked with passion up to the end of life.
He achieved magnificent spatial results in white and black technical as drawing as air effects which set return the spectator several times to his works.
Work of Lilien art, his drawings, engravings and photos became foundation of the Jewish culture.
