CELEBRATING THE GIVING OF TORAH

Almaty 19.05.10

On May 19 in the Jewish Community Center Rimon a holiday of the giving of Torah, Shavuot, was celebrated. President of Mitsva Association Alexander Baron congratulated everybody, "Torah is always up-to-date, young, and modern. It gives the answer to any question. Teach Torah to your children and grandchildren! It contains the truth."

Natalya Rynkovskaya teaches the employees of the Community Center and Hesed Polina the Jewish Tradition. On this remarkable day she told us about historic and religious aspects of the giving of Torah, "Shavuot is an unusual holiday. We always have a choice either to depend on the power of G-d or of a man. Torah was given to the mankind, while Jews were chosen to carry it. The act of accepting Torah is the Union of Jews with G-d."

The Program "Children’s Initiative" is engaged in taking care of the younger generation, promoting its ethnical and spiritual development. Many children came to the Community Center after classes for a "dairy feast" featuring five kinds of ice cream, fresh strawberries, a cheese cake, and juices. The children demonstrated a good knowledge of the Tradition. The Teacher, Anna Sailyants, told about Shavuot. In former times, Jewish children began to learn Torah in a very young age when they could not read. Learning was interesting. Rabbi wrote a letter on a card and told about Torah starting from this letter. Then the letter was written by using honey and children were allowed to leak it. It was easy to remember such a tasty letter!

The learning game continued with a crossword. First-grade students and elder children answered the questions about the holiday and wrote their answers into the cells. The two words appeared in the red cells - "Shavuot" and "Naomi". Thus the children discovered the "Rut Book".

In the evening many more young people came to Rimon. There were groups of two ages at one table -young singles and young families. They listened to Olga Drobnohod about Shavuot, Ten Commandments, and six thousand Jews at the Sinai Mounting. Everybody was happy to celebrate this wonderful Jewish holiday.
