STUFFED FISH AT THE UNITY HOLIDAY

Karaganda 01.05.10

The Unity Day of the Kazakhstan People is a busy time in the Jewish Community Center of Karaganda. Many organizations and educational institutions organize special events to celebrate this holiday, they learn about traditions, national cuisines, and costumes of different peoples. Our Community Center was visited by students who were going to present Jewish culture. The Jewish Library provided them with relevant literature and we demonstrated some secrets of Jewish cuisine. We were also visited by teachers from an orphanage and schools to collect materials in our Center and be able to give their children an interesting and realistic presentation about Jewish culture.

In Karaganda schools and libraries special events devoted to peoples’ friendship were held. Our Jewish Community Center actively participated in them. In the largest event, held in the library named after Gogol, representatives of Chinese, Dagestan, and Jewish Cultural centers met each other. There were many questions about traditions of these peoples; poems were recited in languages of these peoples. Our children also recited poems in Hebrew. Jewish Community Center Shemesh also organized an exhibition of Jewish literature that was presented by Librarian Larisa Brodskaya.

On the Unity Day, May 1st, all ethnical centers gathered at the city square. A festival of ethnical cuisines was taking place here. Our Center presented dishes of a traditional Jewish cuisine dishes made by using modern Israeli recipes. Everybody liked our stuffed fish, forshmak, matzo, and biscuits "The Miracle of Hanukkah". Karagandy Region Akim, Serik Akhmetov, shared his appreciation of the ethnical centers’ work. Then there was a concert. Girls from a youth club "Shatil" sang "Hava Nagila" which everybody knows and likes. The audience and other concert participants were singing and dancing together.
