On April 19 we gathered in our literary salon to celebrate the Memorial Day and Independence Day of Israel.
On May 14, 1948, the foundation of the State of Israel was announced. And already in a few hours its borders were crossed by armies of five states: Iraq’s, Egypt’s, Syria’s, Lebanon’s, and Jordan’s. The fights were going on for one year and three months. Israel had neither an army, nor a government, but it won. Thousands of Jewish soldiers lost their lives. In fact, one person in every hundred of Israeli people was killed. The date when the first victims of the first war were killed became a Memorial Day in honor of all soldiers who died in Israeli wars. The next day became the Independence Day of Israel.
After the presentation on the Israeli history, we altogether stood up to listen to memorial prayer "Iskor" and observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of those who defended Independence of our beloved country at a cost of their own lives.
