JDC SHORT-TERM SERVICE PROGRAM

Almaty 11.08.11

There is no doubt that the major part of the JDC/Cornell Short-Term Service program for the American and Kazakhstan students is volunteer work in various fields of Hesed activity. "Home care" service helps lonely elderly to cope with household difficulties, and there’s same work for our students not only to clean up houses of several clients, but also to relieve people from loneliness.

For employees of service "Home care" it is daily routine. Students wash cases and refrigerators, regiments and windows, do damp cleaning in houses, even hang up carpets and carry out small repair for the house. The important part of the program is a conversation with the client, after all not only material aid matters, the considerable role is played by sincere conversation, possibility to the elderly person to communicate to youth, and to students – to learn about undoubtedly interesting and remarkable destiny of the client.

During all program, the part of groups will be engaged in the help to service "Home care", others go to children's camp at communal center "Rimon" and in library named after Morisa Simashko. Despite a language barrier there is a dialogue of Americans and Russian-speaking children. The American and Kazakhstani students participate in children's creativity, together with children of our summer camp make hand-made articles.

And work in library always will suffice. Valuable books should be rescued from a dust and dirt; workers of library not always have time to make all. The help of students is invaluable. And work with children, and cleaning in library as will proceed till the end of the program.

However not only the labor activity is planned for the American students. After a dinner it’s the turn of lecture from regional representatives of JDC organization. The representatives are Itzik Averbuh and Ilana Levi together with the head of department on communications with sponsors Rina Eidelshtein. In the lecture about JDC’s activity in territory of Kazakhstan the merits of the Jewish community as a whole are underlined, the level of work of all programs is highly estimated.

And the most cheerful part of the day is a dancing project under direction of choreographer Anna Yeremina. The project is the youngest, but the competitions are spent at professional level. The commands battle for a victory, showing not only the skills of dance, but also knowledge in the history of choreography. Memorable prizes and reading and writing are handed over to winners, but in "free" dance participate all – including, our visitors

So pastime of students from America and Kazakhstan is various. The program is directed to the aid of Hesed programs and as on an all-around development of each participant
