The regular meeting of Kazakhstani Hesed Directors was a
kind of "summary report" to a greater extent. It was caused
both the time of the seminar - the beginning of the year, the time
to sum up last year and the barest necessity to share experience of developing
Hesed Programs.
In 2001 3 new Jewish Homes were established in Kazakhstan;
and one more was established in January 2002. Now the total number of
Centers working in Kazakhstan is 12. Young Heseds are developing basic
Welfare and Community programs and got into gear completely. At the same
time they have already been confronted by difficulties. Experienced directors
could suggest some solution of problems even though conditions in different
regions are different. A new system of presentation every Hesed was probated
in order to give a chance to every representative to introduce his organization.
Directors told about the history of establishing their Heseds,
their development and activity in 2001, cited some statistical data. They
accompanied their reports with diagrams and photos to give an idea about
activity of Welfare centers. The directors shared their success and problems,
their plans and new projects. Every presentation became a discussion of
common problems of all the regions. Yael Kalcheim Coordinator of Welfare
programs and Max Wiesel JDC Coordinator in Transcaucasia and Central Asia
(both coordinators are from Jerusalem) took an active part in it.
The psychological aspect of activity of Welfare Leader is
very important, therefore the students were listening to the lecture read
by psychologist Irina Zaltsman with a great interest; and after it they
discussed the ways of practical application of given theoretical knowledge.
The participants gave a lot of examples showing the importance of individual
approach to every client and discussed them with the professional psychologist.
The seminar showed appreciable progress in development of
Welfare Centers in Kazakhstan. Hesed Directors considered many important
questions together with the regional coordinators, and many problems were
solved. During the review of the seminar Max Wiesel Joint Coordinator
and the President of "Mitsva" Association Alexander Baron assessed
it as a highly productive.
