It
is the second time that the leaders of the Jewish communities of Kazakhstan,
Uzbekistan, and Kirgizia gather in Almaty. The "Leadership" seminar
under the direction of Marina Gutman started here on July 27. We have visited
it and asked Marina several questions:
"How did the participants changed since your last meeting?"
"First of all the group changed in number. The previous
seminar was a kind of selective - several people left."
"Each of the participants has some experience of work with
the community. Does it interfere with the theory you give?"
"The
program is meant to prescribe as little as possible. We aren't imposing anything,
but trying to make them see several ways of solving an issue. Maybe this very
fact helps us to find a common language with each of the participants."
"The group consists of people of different age. Were there
difficulties in mutual understanding between the generations?"
"No,
fortunately there weren't. But there was a discussion of inequality of women's
rights. Anyway, it's one of the seminar goals - to teach people to solve
vexed questions."
"If you try to describe the modern leader of the FSU
Jewish community in a few words, it will be…"
"Well, look at these people in the room. I think, they are
the real leaders of the modern community - they can make others follow
them, they know their people's needs, and they are eager to meet them."
