The Jewish community of Astana was looking forward
to the month of Adar with its most colorful and joyous holiday - Purim.
The most long-awaited moment was reading of Megilat Esther. Rabbi
Yuda Kubalkin told about the history and importance of the holiday twice -
first in synagogue and then in one of the city schools.
While listening, community members again experienced the events
that occurred in Persia several centuries ago. The Jews' hearts filled with
pride for Israeli nation, because such selfless people as Esther and Mordecai
have always been its soul.
The holiday brought the atmosphere of joy and fun to the community.
Merry Jewish songs, bright posters, pictures, smiles, and jokes welcomed the
guests.
The youth prepared colorful Purimshpil. Mordecai, Esther, Haman,
Ahashverosh, and other Purim heroes alternated on the stage.
Most of the community members wore fancy dresses and masks. Plenty
of quizzes, jokes, competitions, dances, and songs made the guests remember
the festival. But the main thing was that everybody had a chance to observe
the commandments concerned with this holiday - reading the Book of Esther,
gathering means for charity, giving out mishloah manot, and festive meals.
Tender, affecting, merry Jewish melodies masterly played by M. Lebedinsky's
ensemble helped to create a special festive atmosphere.
Purim Sameach!
