One of the Women's club meetings was devoted to the subject
"Bread and challah". It was told about the separation of challah - one of three precepts destined only for the Jewish woman.
The participants learnt that the word "challah"
means both a portion of dough that is to be separated and Saturday's bread
(twisted loaf). The participants were also told why there should be obligatory
2 challahs on the table on Saturdays.
Women shared their secrets of bread baking and discussed
the way Saturday challah should be looked like.
"Challah's appearance is nor less important its taste",
a club leader Ludmila Chukareva told. "Exactly this enriches and
beautifies our holiday table".
Then women were taught how to plait challah. Challah's plaiting in three
braids wasn't difficult at all, but challah in three braids made lots
of troubles for our skilled women.
For Women's club members not to forget everything they learned
during the meeting, it was decided to issue a special book about bread
and challah.
