COMPUTERS AS A GIFT

Almaty 14.07.2005

Thanks to Joint Distribution Committee Jewish communities in16 cities of Kazakhstan have received Pentium III computers.

These computers were the first and most expected PC's for the majority of Kazakhstani Jewish communities. Their appearance aroused keen interest of the community members of all ages. The computers will help the Jews to communicate, get together, and know the communities of other countries.

"I guess the youth will now stay here overnight" Anatoly Itkin, the director of Hesed Natan said. "Boys spend hours at the monitor, and we need to remind them that it's time to give the computer to the members of a women or history club".

Computer skills are now as necessary as writing or reading skills. But for the majority of Kazakhstani community members a PC remains only a dream.

"Sure I want to gain computer skills" Irina Pankratova from Taraz city said. "I realize that it'll be hard to do without them, but… my family won't be able to buy a PC in the years coming."

Thanks to Joint's support people now have a chance to use a PC in a Hesed or Jewish Community Center in their town. Children can study the Torah and Hebrew through computer games.

"We've got a lot of PC's now!" thirteen-year-old Polina Engel from Pavlodar said. "We can now do home assignment in computer science, compile and type papers. Thank you, Joint Committee!"

Students can use Internet resources, their parent acquire necessary skills in their job, and elderly people look forward to corresponding with their relatives from abroad.

"It's our first computer!" one of the Aturau community elders Tsilya Danevitch said. "It's not just long-expected, it's the embodiment of our hopes and plans. It gives us an opportunity to keep in touch with other Jewish communities in the FSU and throughout the world."

The gift also helped to fulfill the dreams of Taraz and Pavlodar communities. Now they have computer classes with volunteering teachers.

The computers presented by Joint Committee to the Jewish community of Kazakhstan bring joy and open up new possibilities, help to acquire new knowledge and skills. They are an important contribution to the future of the community.
