SHAVUOT

Almaty 23.05.2007

3319 years ago in Pesach the Most High has removed the Jews from Egypt, having released them from slavery in the alien country. Within 49 days the Jews wandered on desert and, at last, for the fiftieth day at Mount Sinai the G-d presented to the Jews Torah - book, which kept the people during all long history of its existence. This day was named "Shavuot", that in translation from Hebrew means "weeks", as seven weeks separated the Jews who have left Egypt, from reception Torah.

Shavuot is also named as "holiday of reaping", because this day harvest of wheat began. In honor of a beginning of reaping in the Jerusalem Temple was made sacrifice to G-d of two breads baked from wheat of a new crop.

Shavuot concerns to three holidays (Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkoth), about which observance to the Jews was specified since they wandered in desert of Sinai after exodus from Egypt.

In a holiday Shavuot in synagogue is read the chapter of Torah, in which is spoken about its presentation, the Ten Commandments read on the special motive, which should remind a voice of the Most High, heard by the Jews at Mount Sinai. For hearing of Torah in synagogue come both adults, and children, even the smallest should hear reading of this chapter. A holiday begin from reading of a pray in the evening of May 22. The women light in honor of a holiday candles, and then celebratory meal is arranged. After meal till the morning in synagogue learn Torah. In Israel the holiday is marked within one day, outside of Israel the Jews celebrate Shavuot for two days.

According to custom, in memory that having received Torah, the Jews should begin to observe the laws about Kosher food, and consequently the use of meat was impossible before performance of special actions, in Shavuot in the morning eat dairy food. But, as the laws order in a holiday to eat meat, day time and evening meal make with meat. The days of a holiday Shavuot are considered as sacred days, therefore at this time do not carry out any work, in particular, it is impossible to photograph and to make videoshooting. In opinion of chief rabbi of Republic of Kazakhstan Rabbi Yeshayah Cogan, Pesach has brought to the Jews physical freedom, Shavuot - spiritual. Being free spiritually, the man reflects on sense of the existence and aspires to G-d. In independent Kazakhstan, the Jews feel free people and have an opportunity, not being than, to follow the laws of religion, to learn Torah and openly celebrate ancient holidays.
