The Jewish Community of Shymkent City initiated the establishment of the Center in 1989. The necessity in Cultural Center was imminent a long time before it was established officially. By the end of 80ieth the number of Jews in the city was between 10-12 thousand people. People came to synagogue to celebrate holidays together, to share their sorrow and happiness and to remember forgotten but their own traditions. There is an ensemble of Jewish music in the city, which is bringing a small part of national art to the events.

Present Chairman of the Cultural Center Dmitriy Meredin has been
in charge only since September 1999. Dmitriy represents the Diaspora in the
Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan pretty successfully.
The Cultural Center does not have too many events. But they are
very proud of the Day of Language and Culture of Jewish People.
 There
is Sunday school, Hebrew-studying courses "Ulpan", library, Youth
Club under the Jewish Community Center because of them children can study the
history and language of their ancestors; and adults can feel the charm of the
native language. The focus of attention is on spiritual and cultural heritage
of Jewish people. This year was established a Klezmer ensemble under the direction
of Korotkov.
The Center works a lot on social support of needy families; it
works under the aegis of the "Joint" - the World Jewish Organization.
For the last years they managed to do a lot but the main thing - they paid attention
and united practically all South Kazakhstani Jews and their families. They celebrate
the holidays together; take part in all City and oblast events. Jewish people
became one of the nations, which wants to live in Kazakhstan, use their own
language, bring their children up in it, live together with the other representatives
of other Diasporas. Now the activity of the Center is very valuable for the
further strengthening of the Peace and mutual Consent in our common home.
The Jewish Community of South Kazakhstan conducts many events.
All of them are the achievement of JCC,
Hesed and the Cultural Center,
which is like an umbrella for the whole Diaspora.
