Jewish cultural center "Hatikva" was founded in 1993. Its initiator and first chairman was Polina Voskoboynik. First of all she tried to determine the number of people who would visit the center. The work was carried out very quickly and there were already 200 people on the first meeting (for comparison the community consists of 870 people). Jews of three generations were gathered almost at once. The Council of Elders was created to continue searching for the Jews.
Jewish holidays - Purim, Chanukah, Rosh-ha-Shannah - united the community. There were regular lessons on Jewish history and tradition. People eagerly gave their books to the library that was not yet opened. They did everything from the bottom of their hearts.
In 1998 "Mitsva" Association began assisting the cultural center. It was then that food sets were distributed (first time among 65 clients). Lessons on Jewish culture, tradition, and history became deeper and more regular. The center arranged meetings with people coming from Israel. In 2000 some other programs began operating: medical service, "Hostess" club (its members make articles, draw, knit, and embroider). There is a famous volunteers' string quartet that plays potpourri of Jewish songs and melodies.
The cultural center has lasting contacts with other organizations and establishments - Small Assembly of Kazakhstani Nations, regional cultural administration, boarding-school, and regional information administration.
Jews living in remote locations (Shchutchinsk, Borovoye, Krasny Yar, Stepnogorsk, Atbasar, etc.) are not left aside as well. No holiday is celebrated without them - a bus from Kokshetau takes them to have a fun in the circle of the community.
